Philani Mabhena, a renowned Zimbabwean football coach, joined Archford Hadebe on the Pass and Move Podcast to share his inspiring story. From his humble beginnings to his rise through the coaching ranks, Mabhena's passion for football shines through.
Mabhena's love affair with football began in the prison guard yard of Bulawayo prisons, where he would kick plastic balls around. He attended Khami Primary and David Livingstone Primary in Harare, where he captained his school team. His hereditary love for the sport came from his late uncles, the Khanyes, who played for Highlanders in the 80s.
Mabhena's coaching career spans over two decades. He began his coaching practice in 1997 at Msiteli Secondary School, where he coached junior football excelling with his keen eye for talent in the school lads. He worked tirelessly to upgrade his coaching skills, obtaining his beginners, level one, and level two certifications. The introduction of the CAF regional curriculum further enhanced his coaching expertise.
Mabhena credits Victor "Tshuks" Tshuma for recognizing his passion for football. He produced several young stars who became household names, including those who played for Highlanders. His ability to spot and nurture talent earned him a reputation as a skilled coach.
Mabhena's transition from junior to senior football coaching began with his project, Sunrise. He was later assimilated into Highlanders FC, where he worked with his Sunrise players. His coaching experience spans various teams, including Chicken Inn FC, FC Platinum, and Howmine FC in Zimbabwe and Mochudu Centre Chiefs, Jwaneng Galaxy, Motlakase FC and many great teams in Botswana.
Mabhena emphasizes the importance of coaches having a plan B source of income. He is currently the vice chair of the National Coaches Association and advocates for coaches' rights. Mabhena hopes to find a new project with a clear vision and is eager to contribute to the development of Zimbabwean football.
